Olfactory metaphor and narrative imagination in the cinema image: an analysis of the film Perfume

Yunhee Lee

This paper aims to examine how sensation can be signified through investigating metaphorization of olfactory experience based on iconicity and through narrative imagination based on indexicality. For this purpose, my hypothesis is that there are three kinds of semiosis, namely, the representative, the indicative, and the interpretative. Each semiosis consists in a triadic set of components, Sign-Object-Interpretant, realizing a triadic purpose-driven action. In other words, Interpretant(a means) functions as a mediator between Sign(an action) and Object(a purpose), so as to realize the purpose of Object. For this reason, Sign is forced by Object and in turn forces Interpretant, so as to mediate Interpretant with Object, functioning as a mediator. In this respect, representative semiosis is sign action where relation of Sign and Interpretant is dominant based on iconicity by representing the relation; Indicative semioisis is sign action where relation of Sign and Object is dominant based on indexicality by indicating the relation; interpretative semiosis is sign action where the dialogical relation between representative semiosis and indicative semiosis is represented, so as to mediate Interpretant with Object. Based on the above, I argue that semiosis is a process of self-interpretation by means of interpreting qualisign as a sign of possibility. Therefore, semiotic self, which is formed by means of semiosis, is characterized by dialogic self, which evolves through dialogue between the inner Sign and the outer Sign, accordingly becoming an interpreting agent for self-identity.
