Roland Barthes’s ‘That-has-been’, Surprise, Madness

PARK, SangWoog

This study attempted to analyze the 'surprise' and 'insanity' which are the emotional effects that cause ‘that-has-been’ which is the essence thesis of Barth's photograph theory. Through this, I tried to clarify the relationship between the specificity of the photographic medium and the emotion felt by the audience. The results of this study are as follows. First, the surprise of Barth in the photograph comes from the reality of the referent. He is surprised that the scene he saw in the picture is not a fantasy, but a reality of 'past state' above all. This surprise is caused by the fear and charm that a particular photograph causes, or by the melancholy we feel in a photograph of an already dead person. The surprise Niépce felt in front of his first picture came from the reality of this new image, which is ontologically different from existing images. Second, Barth's surprise comes not only from the reality of the referent but also from the temporal nature of the photograph. In photography, time is not a fictional time, but a time of reality. As a result, Barth is forced to guess the fate of life and death and to be surprised. In addition, since the tenses of the past future, of the past perfect, and the tenses of the photographer, the referent, and the spectator are overlapped together on one photograph, Barth experiences 'Punctum of Time'. Finally, madness in photography comes from this fact convincing a spectator to see what the past state of things is like. It arises from a divided hallucination, a split hallucination of the existence and absence of 'there was clearly in the past, but now is not gone'. But true madness does not occur only by the reality of the referent, but only when the viewer has feelings of love or compassion about the referent. Barthes’s greenhouse photograph is representative. Barth advocates a powerful realism picture full of insanity, instead of a mildly temperate photograph (artistic photography, generalized photography). He experiences so-called "ecstasy of photography" in these photographs.
