Hong Kong’s post colonial art and cultural identity after the 90’s

KIM, YoungMi

The post-colonial studies of Hong Kong does not only address issues from the period after the british colonial. So, the problem is that Hong Kong was part of China’s territory and did not exist as an independent country from the beginning. On 1997, Acbar Abbas pointed out that Hong Kong has been absorbed by the “seamlessness” and disappeared. However, as of now, 2017, there are district segregation and uneven surfaces between Hong Kong and the mainland of China. To depict this from a specific level, the following are some problems. First, it’s the use of Chinese language. On this situation, there would be the gap between the “Mandarin – Cantonese“ When they are associated with political aspects or social problems, the difference in language translates into strong resistance. Secondly, it is the problems considering the political system. Hong Kong defines China as their political enemy and advocates ‘freedom’ and the rule of law. These two problems required a new form of cultural expression in building Hong Kong’s identity. After 1997, The post-colonial appearance of the Hong Kong citizens where revealed by abandoning their appearance of ‘post colonialism’ that was basically made in the colonial period, 1960-1970’. Preferentially, they take forms that reject the third mixed space negotiation space. It evolves from the UK Museum of Art in the form of a studio and reveals art in a new area. Next, there was the involvement of other artistic activities that excluded Brush Art, a distinctive traditional art form of China. Performance Art, Installation Art and more have emerged and most of all, young female artists who have never been able to stand out because of the opposite –standing male artists who were supported by the previous British government, became a huge success. Therefore, these forms of art in the postcolonial space in Hong Kong express their identity differently from the ‘New Ink Movement’ which was already done in between 1964 and the 1970’s. There is a total different direction from the Hongkong-ness and hypothetical ‘looking for Chinese roots.’ This researcher took the concept of Nicolas Bourriaud’s concept of The Radicant and identified it as ‘Alter Modernity.’ It is not Hong Kong’s aspiration for the mainland, but finding an identity in a new direction, seeking for life without the roots, as an ‘Hongkongese’ still, without erasing the word Hong Kong.
