요나스 메카스 필름 다이어리 「월든」에서의 질료적 실재성과 몽환성
이 글은 요나스 메카스 필름 다이어리의 대표작인 「월든」을 중심으로, 그의 영상 이미지가 띠는 질료적 실재성과 그것을 바탕으로 한 몽환성의 생성과 작동방식을 고찰한다. 「월든 (일기, 노트, 스케치)」(1968-69)는 일상을 촬영한 영상 이미지로 이루어진 3시간짜리 필름 다이어리 영화이다. 일상의 기록인 이 작품이 독특한 몽환성을 자아내며 특별한 정서적 반향을 이끌어내는 것은 무엇 때문일까? 영상 이미지의 편린인 짤막한 동영상이 일상적으로 만들어지고 공유되며 영상-기억을 만드는 기록영상의 시대인 2010년대에, 일찍이 1960년대부터 필름 다이어리 작업을 하며 영화 매체성을 개척한 영상작가 메카스의 작업은 새롭게 고찰될 필요성을 지닌다. 메카스의 필름 다이어리는 즉물성을 띤, ‘볼 수 있는’ 주관성을 전시한다. 빛나는 행복의 순간, ‘아름다움의 섬광’들을 메카스는 정서의 표현을 극대화할 수 있는 방식으로 필름에 담았다. 그리고 그를 통해 질료적 매체성의 한가운데에서 정신적 몽환성을 만들어낸다. 리투아니아 출신의 망명자인 요나스 메카스는 영상작업을 통해 낯선 이주의 장소인 뉴욕에서 새로운 고향을 찾아내려 하였다. 요나스 메카스의 작품들은 실재와 몽상을 동시에 표현하며 그 두 가지가 완전히 하나로 어우러져 있는 양상을 나타낸다. 2010년대 관객들은 메카스의 영상에서 일상적 필름 다이어리의 가능성을 발견하고 매체적 정서를 공유하는 것으로 여겨진다.
The Material Reality and Dreaminess in Jonas Mekas’s Walden
In this essay, I investigate the aesthetics and thematics of Jonas Mekas’s film diaries with a focus on Walden (Diaries, Notes, and Sketches) (1968-69). Mekas was displaced from his home Lithuania, underwent the time in a refugee camp in Germany, and came to New York in 1949. Since 1950’s he filmed his everyday life in New York with a 16mm film Bolex camera. Mekas filmed in a unique and unconventional style for inscribing the lively and present affect into moving images. It notably relates to the film-mediality as material reality. As a refugee, Mekas sought to find a new home in a strange place. He wanted to regain Lithuania in New York and his act of filming was the endeavor. Such a motivation, with the filmic material reality, invites a dreamy tone to his images. Walden presents lots of real but dreamy images taken from Mekas’s life in New York in 1960’s; landscapes, situations, friends, and places. The presence of moving images with affect “from the Life of a Happy Man” became a new home to him as both locus and medium. Walden, a possible paradise in the filmic reality, is the name cited from Henry David Thoreau’s work. How do the images of Mekas’s film diary create an emotional resonance to the spectators in the era of digital imaging? The material reality and dreaminess in Walden give an answer to this question.
