‘탈진실(포스트-트루스) 시대의 진실적 스토리텔링’
24시간 동안 쉬지 않고 방영되는 케이블 뉴스 채널과 전문 다큐멘터리 채널은 현실의 정치/문화/사회 문제를 사실적이고 투명한 관점으로 접하 고자 하는 대중들의 욕구를 반영한다. 지정학적 국제 정치 뉴스에 대한 팬덤이 존재할 정도로 뉴스와 다큐멘터리는 인기 문화 콘텐츠가 되었다. 한편으로는 객관적이고 중립적인 재현을 담보로 한 진실 주장의 신뢰성을 무너뜨리면서 확산되는 가짜뉴스, 즉 탈진실 현상의 심각성을 주목할 필 요가 있다. 2016년 미국 대선에서 러시아로 추측되는 세력이 기획하고 생 산한 가짜뉴스가 유명 사업가이지만 정치 경력이 전무한 도날드 트럼프의 당선에 실질적인 영향을 끼쳤다는 연구결과가 발표될 정도로 불명확한 가 짜뉴스도 실제성을 획득한다는 점을 증명하였다. 치밀하고 교묘하게 기획 된 가짜뉴스가 한 나라의 정치 지형을 뒤흔들고 심지어 대통령 선거의 결 과에 직접적인 영향을 끼쳤다는 주장은 더 이상 음모론으로 치부되지 않 는 엄연한 현실이 되었다. 본 논문은 탈진실 시대에서 갈수록 불분명 해 지는 진실 담론과 진실 주장 방법에 대한 진단을 하고자 한다. 궁극적으 로, 진실이 본질적으로 위협 받는 현재의 탈진실 시대에서 허구적 요소를 전달하는 스토리텔링 방식을 접목한 스토리텔링 전환이 진실적인 주장의 효율적인 대안이 된다는 점을 다큐멘터리와 뉴스, 그리고 과학 분야의 사 례를 들어 논하고자 한다.
Storytelling in the “Post-Truth” Era
Abundance of 24/7 cable news and channels entirely dedicated to history and documentary feature presentations suggests the fact that the public is in need of realistic and transparent perspective on political, cultural, and social problems. News and documentary is popular form of media. Geopolitical and international politics have their own fandom. In recent years, “post-truth”, and “fake news” have entered the imagination of the public, presenting difficulty to distinguish and isolate the objective and neutral truth, causing serious repercussion to the truth-claiming contents such as news and documentary. Two terminologies gained notoriety and actuality when celebrity business man, yet a political newcomer, Donald Trump won the 2016 Presidential Election with suspected help from the Russian generated social media contents. Meticulously and tactfully designed fake news has proved to effectively influence the general public. Post-truth and fake news are no longer considered to be a mere conspiracy theory. This paper attempts to diagnosis the statue of truthful representation of reality in the post-truth era. The paper would argue that paradoxically, fictive nature of storytelling serves an alternative to the objective representation in the era where validity of truthful representation is questioned.
