세계극장 : 아비 바르부르크의 문화이론에 나타난 퍼포먼스 패러다임
본 논문의 목적은 ‘퍼포먼스’ 개념을 통해 독일의 미술사학자 아비 바르 부르크(1866-1929)의 문화이론을 고찰하는 것이다. 바르부르크가 평생 연구했던 주제가 고대로부터 이어진 인간 감정을 표현하는 몸짓 언어였다 는 사실에 주목하고, 1990년대 이후 문화학 연구의 핵심 주제이자 동시대 미술의 화두인 ‘퍼포먼스’와 그의 학문 세계를 접목시키고자 했다. 바르부르크는 예술의 자율성과 순수미술에 집중했던 당대 미술사학자들 의 편협한 시각에 반대하며 삶 속의 이미지를 탐구하였다. 이미지에 대한 연구에서 생동감을 놓치지 않으려 했던 그는 연극, 축제, 제의에 일관된 관심을 기울이면서 인간 신체를 매개로 현실을 제작하거나 현실에 영향을 미치는 행위 전반에 대한 연구를 진행했다. 초기 저작부터 말년 프로젝트 까지 바르부르크의 이론 전체를 아우를 수 있는 특징을 논하는 과정에서 ‘퍼포먼스’는 그가 강조했던 다양한 개념과 연결될 수 있다. 즉 몸짓 gesture, 움직이는 신체 body in motion, 현실 reality, 생동하는 삶 life in movement 등을 포괄하기에 이른다. 또한 바르부르크가 제안한 학술용어인 ‘파토스포르멜’ Pathosformel과 ‘잔존 Nachleben’의 의미를 확인하고, 동시대 퍼포먼스아트 독해에 적용 가능한 개념인지 검토함으로써 바르부르크 문화이론의 현재성을 논할 수 있다.
Theatrum Mundi: The Performance Paradigm of Aby Warburg's Culture Theory
The aim of this paper is to review the culture theory of Aby Warburg (1866-1929), a German art historian, in conjunction with the concept of ‘Performance.’ The subject of Warburg's lifelong study was body language expressing human emotions from ancient times, and I tried to connect his academic research with ‘Performance,’ a key theme of cultural studies since the 1990s and a topic of contemporary art. Warburg opposed the narrow view of art historians who focused on the autonomy of art and the realm of fine art at that time and sought to explore the image of life. Trying not to miss the vitality of image, he paid consistent attention to plays, festivals, and rituals, and continued his research on the whole act of producing reality or influencing lives through the medium of human bodies. In discussing the features that encompass Warburg’s whole theory from the early work to the last project, ‘Performance’ can be linked to the various concepts he emphasized. This includes gestures, body in motion, reality, and life in motion. By reflecting on the meaning of Warburg’s neologisms, ‘Pathosformel’ and ‘Nachleben’, I examined whether the concepts are applicable to reading contemporary performance art. Through this process, this paper sought to shed light on the present significance of the Warburg’s culture theory.
