현대 ‘공포스런 광대’의 출현 : 19세기 프랑스 팬터마임의 광대에서 ‘조커’까지
현대 영화에 나타난 ‘조커’와 같이 잔인하고 공포스러운 광대의 연원은 어디에 있을까? 본 연구는 ‘조커’가 근대의 대변혁기에 나타난 충격적인 낭만주의 광대 피에로의 계승자란 전제하에, 그것의 오랜 발현의 현장으 로 나아가고자 한다. 이 공포스러운 광대는 긴 역사의 산물이며, 복합적 인 생성의 조건 속에서 출생한다. 이와 같은 출생과 관련해 본 논문이 주 목하는 것은 19세기 파리에서 출현해 노동자들의 피안이 된 근대 팬터마 임 무대이며, 근대의 대중을 사로잡은 혁신적인 스펙터클의 세계이다. 보 다 구체적으로 주목하는 것은 19세기 초 파리 퓌낭뷜 무대의 전설적인 피 에로 드뷔로와 19세기 말에서 20세기 초 유럽과 미국의 양 대륙을 종횡 무진으로 활동한 난폭한 영국 광대 할론 리 형제이다. 이유는 이들 혁신 적인 피에로야말로 현대 공포스러운 광대의 토대가 된다고 추정하기 때문 이다. 근현대의 공포스러운 광대는 고대 팬터마임과 근대 코메디아 델라르테 를 선조로 둠으로써 오랜 희극의 역사와 발전에 예속해있다. 이런 맥락에 서 잔혹하고 공포스러운 광대의 출생은 희극적인 팬터마임의 발전에 필연 적인 변곡점을 형성한다. 그의 출생은 19세기를 전후로 생겨난 근대 미학 의 거대한 전회와 무관치 않으며, 낭만주의가 몰두한 그로테스크 미학의 약진과는 내밀히 교차한다. 따라서 논문은 근대 팬터마임의 발전과 19세 기의 공포스러운 피에로의 출현 양상을 탐구하며, 그것의 현대적인 계승 양상을 또한 살펴본다.
Aesthetic of grotesque : The horror clown of the 19th century French pantomime and the “joker”
Where do horror clowns in modern movies like the Joker come from? This study aims to revisit the origins of the iconic villain, the Joker. The article first focuses on the world of innovative spectacles, which appeared in Paris in the 19th century and captivated the public. Specifically, we trace the foundations of the modern horror clown from the pantomime of the legendary pierrot, J. G. Deburau, in the Théâtre des Funambules in the early 19th century Paris. This article also studies the violent British clowns, the Halon Lee brothers, who were active in Europe and the United States in the late 19th and early 20th century. Having originated from the ancient pantomime and the modern commedia dell’arte, the horrifying pierrots, or clowns, form a dramatic fork in the development of comedy. This formation is intimately connected to the evolution of modern aesthetics. Moreover, it subtly intersects with the advancement of grotesque aesthetics immersed in romanticism.
