Memories Reconstructed in the Installations of Yin Xiuzhen

Joo-eun Lee

From old media such as letters and pictures to photography and electronic media, all the recording media are related to human aspirations for memory. Some memories can be named and interpreted, but others cannot. In the pre-modern era, time and space were connected through the medium of places, but in modern times, the speed of change was accelerated and the contextual meaning of places disappeared. This has left people's memories increasingly uncertain, with memories of the past not continuing to the present. In this study, I connected the memory theory of Aleida Assmann with the works of Chinese installation artist Yin Xiuzhen, who is active internationally. Yin has brought the anxiety and loss of individuals, which have been accumulated in the process of China's rapid social change, to the level of a place experience. She worked in a way that evoked experiences that could not easily be narrated by traditional art media through the realism of installation art. In other words, the place that mediates the current time, the time of oblivion, and the current space and the lost space will become artwork. Yin’s work is worth noting in that it unravels the realm of non-reproducible memory into art. The method of reconstructing memories into art needs to be discussed in earnest in future memory discourse.
