언택트 시대 넷플릭스와 영화 : 퀄리티 콘텐츠로서의 영화와 극장의 의미 변화
넷플릭스 오리지널 영화는 극장 개봉을 통한 영화 유통 및 소비 질서, 영화의 정의 등에 균열을 야기하고 있다. 극장 개봉은 영화 고유의 매체 적 특징으로 인식되어 왔으나 코로나19 팬데믹은 극장을 대표적인 기피 공간으로 부상시키고 있다. 이러한 상황에서 넷플릭스를 통해 영화를 공 개하려는 사례도 늘고 있다. 이 연구는 넷플릭스 오리지널 영화가 영화의 의미에 대한 고전적 질문을 새롭게 제기하고 있다는 점에 주목하여, 넷플 릭스 오리지널 영화가 구독 기반 서비스를 지속하게 하는 ‘퀄리티’ 콘텐츠 로 기능하고 있음을 주장하였다. 세계적 거장 감독들의 예술 작품으로서 넷플릭스 오리지널 영화는 세계 영화제 수상을 통해 예술성과 화제성을 인정받으며 넷플릭스를 콘텐츠 기업으로 부각시키는 동시에 언택트 시대 영화 소비 문화를 가정, 개인 중심으로 변화시키고 있다. 이 연구는 넷플 릭스 오리지널 영화에 대한 논의를 통해 팬데믹 시대 급속도로 변화하는 극장 중심의 영화 문화를 현재의 미디어 전경 변화와 TV와의 관계 속에 서, 가정의 맥락 속에서 탐색하고자 했다.
The meaning of cinema and Netflix in ‘untact’ era : cinema as quality content in Netflix Original
The global pandemic of COVID-19 has transformed activities from face-to-face to “untact,” or contact-free, through digital media. This trend is especially prominent in movie-watching habits, namely, the rapid increase in OTT platforms like Netflix, and the growing global culture of watching movies through “subscription-based” platform services. The traditional definition of “cinema” has deteriorated with the decline in theater-centered collective movie-watching culture. Netflix Original is leading changes in various aspects such as Netflix has gained recognition as a “content” company that offers movies by famous directors. The decline of theater culture in the untact era has allowed Netflix to serve as a new channel for movie releases, establishing itself as an alternative to theater-oriented culture. In the post TV regime, Netflix Original movie continues the genealogy of quality TV, and at the same time functions as higher artistic quality content.
