Deleuze’s Cinematic Cogito : The Thinking Capacity of Cinema Image and Its Expansion

Choi, Jin A

Cinema is the most familiar media to the public. We can easily watch cinema anywhere and are affected by it. Cinema sometimes mislead people yet, at the same time, it provide new possibilities in life. Criticizing the problems of the ideological image of films or the reproduction of Hollywood’s commercial images, Gilles Deleuze explores new possibilities of cinema image. In addition, his image research enhances the role and status of films in the modern era of mass media. To him, cinema raises a question of thought. In particular, a cinema image is an image of thought that provokes shocking reaction from the public, removing it fron rationality. In this regard, cinema is a new style of philosophy that creates a new image of thought. In addition, it is no more than artistic amusement in that cinematic thoughts create the images of new thoughts that create various values and meanings of existence and life. For Deleuze, cinema is ‘philosophy’ and ‘art.’ In addition, the three are connected with ‘thinking’ and ‘creating’ on the basis of emotion, departed from that of reason. Cinema eventually completes the image of new thoughts through the collage of philosophy and art based on emotion. This leads to the practical problem of ‘resistance’ through the ambivalent Nietzsche-like work of the criticism of rational thinking and the creation of new thinking. The emotional thinking of cinema is not only turning over rational thinking, but the meaning of overturning should be led as practical resistance against the society.
