예술지상주의 시각으로 바라본 함세덕의 <어밀레종> 연구
함세덕의 <어밀레종>은 국내 근대희곡 중 예술지상주의 희곡의 시초를 기념할만한 작품임에도 불구하고 시대적 배경에 묻혀 이에 대한 연구는 소홀히 다루어졌다. 따라서 본고에서는 예술지상주의 관점으로 <어밀레 종>을 분석했다. 예술지상주의의 의미는 예술을 위해 인생을 버릴 뿐 아 니라 그 안에서 인생의 정당화를 찾는 것이다. <어밀레종>의 주요 등장인물의 극적 목표는 작품의 초목표인 예술적 결과물인 어밀레종 건립이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 <어밀레종>의 주요인 물인 미추홀, 시모나, 이화녀 이 세 인물의 예술지상주의적 성격을 예술 적 결과물을 위한 희생에 중점을 두고 분석하였다. 결국 이 세 인물의 신 종건립을 위한 각각의 희생으로 어밀레종이 완성되어 종소리가 울리며 막 을 내린다. 본 연구자는 이 세 인물의 희생을 통한 어밀레종의 건립이야 말로 예술을 위한 예술, 즉, 예술적 결과물을 위한 희생이 돋보이는 ‘예술 지상주의 성격’이라고 본다. 따라서 본 연구자는 함세덕의 <어밀레종>이 예술지상주의극이라는 것을 제언한다.
A study on the Emilejong of Ham Seduk from the perspective of art for art's sake
Despite Emilejong of Ham Seduk being a remarkable work of art for art's sake at the beginning of the era of modern plays in Korea, research on Emilejong has been neglected due to Colonial historical complications. Therefore, this study analyzed Emilejong from the perspective of art for art's sake. The meaning of art for art's sake is to throw away one's life for art and to find a justification of life within it. The dramatic goal of the main characters in Emilejong is to establish the Emilejong, an artistic outcome that is the primary goal of the work. For that reason, in this study, the artistic characteristics of the three main characters, Michuhol, Simona, and Lee Hwa-nyeo of Emilejong were analyzed with an emphasis on sacrifices for artistic outcomes. Eventually, each sacrifice made for the construction of a new bell by these three characters completes the Emilejong and ends with the bell ringing. The researcher believes that the establishment of the Emilejong through the sacrifices of these three figures is that of art of art’s sake, that is, an ‘artistic character’ that stands out as a result of their sacrifice for an artistic outcome. Therefore, the researcher suggests that Emailejong of Ham Seduk is a play of art for art’s sake.
