ANT로 바라본 국립중앙박물관 <사유의 방> : 근대적 뮤지엄의 비대칭에 관한 인식론적 비판
브루노 라투르는 그의 저서 『우리는 근대인인 적이 없었다』(We Have Never Been Modern)에서 근대 세계가 이제까지 존재한 적이 없으며 근 대성은 아직 시작조차 하지 않았음을 주장하였다. 라투르는 우리가 거쳐 왔다고 믿어온 근대는 주체와 대상, 자연과 사회, 문명과 야만 등을 엄격 하게 구분하였으나, 사실상 인간은 문제 해결을 위해 과학과 기술을 활용 하여 인간과 자연의 하이브리드를 수없이 증식해 오기도 했다면서 이 두 종류의 실천에 모순이 존재한다고 진단했다. 그는 자연과 문화, 과학과 사회 사이에는 명확한 경계가 존재하지 않으므로, 인간과 비인간의 복잡 하고 얽힌 관계를 ‘대칭적’(symmetrical)으로 설명하고 이해해야만 현재 인 류에 닥친 위기에 더 잘 대처할 수 있다고 강조했다. 본 연구는 근대적인 사고를 기반으로 하여 18세기에 탄생한 근대적 장소인 뮤지엄을 브루노 라투르의 ‘대칭적 인류학’(symmetrical anthropology)을 가장 잘 설명하고 연습할 수 있는 장소로 보고, 행위자-네트워크 이론 (Actor-Network Theory)의 관점으로 뮤지엄을 관찰하고자 한다. 본 연구는 국립중앙박물관의 <사유의 방>을 연구대상으로 하여, 우리가 인간과 비인간의 하이브리드를 이해하고 그동안의 비대칭성을 재조정 혹은 교정 할 수 있는 최적 장소로서의 뮤지엄을 재조명할 것이다.
ANT approach to the ‘Room of Quiet Contemplation’ : Epistemological Critique on Asymmetry in Modern Museums
In his book We Have Never Been Modern, Bruno Latour argues that the modern world has never existed and that modernity has yet to begin. Latour critiques the perceived modern era's strict distinctions between subject and object, nature and society, and civilization and barbarism. He points out the inherent contradiction in these practices, noting that humans have continually created hybrids of nature and technology to solve problems. Latour emphasizes that since there are no clear boundaries between nature and culture, or science and society, understanding the complex and intertwined relationships between human and non-human actors in a symmetrical way is crucial for better addressing the crises facing humanity. This study views museums, modern institution born in the 18th century based on modernist mindset, as ideal sites to explain and practice Latour's ‘symmetrical anthropology’ and observes them through the lens of Actor-Network Theory (ANT). Focusing on the “Room of Quiet Contemplation” at the National Museum of Korea, this research reevaluates the museum as an optimal site for understanding the human-nonhuman hybrid and for readjusting or correcting the long-standing asymmetries.
